Alpina B7 xDrive
IS this the perfect blend of limo exclusivity and sporting prowess? Taking a bow at last week’s New York Motor Show was the Alpina B7 xDrive – an all-wheel-drive version of BMW’s flagship limousine.
Semi-official tuner Alpina already has a B7 on sale, and this variant is powered by the same 500bhp 4.4-litre V8 engine. However, the additional ‘intelligent’ xDrive system now actively manages the BMW’s 700Nm of torque between front and rear wheels. Depending on driving characteristics and conditions, it works to prevent tyre slip, offering maximum grip at all times. But don’t think you’ll miss out on the traditional BMW rear-wheel-drive experience: under hard acceleration, for example, all the torque is sent to the back for superb traction.
The Alpina B7 xDrive will be available in the US from later in the spring in short and long-wheelbase form, and BMW hasn’t ruled out a European launch in the future. Prices are still unconfirmed, yet the
standard car starts from the equivalent of around £80,000.
Meanwhile, BMW has unveiled a long-wheelbase version of its new 5-Series for China. Thanks to a platform stretched 135mm over the standard car’s, the ‘L’ edition works out longer than the standard 7-Series by 25mm. Four versions will be offered, led by a range-topping 535Li, and sales begin later this year.
