November 2004, Tall Pines Rally near Toronto (Canada). I didn t even finish the race because I crashed on the 5th stage!

DESCRIBE THE EVOLUTION OF YOUR RALLY CAREER (how you found out about the sport, what made you get into it, what was your first race like, and how you have trained to get where you are today)?:

I have been a car enthusiast for as long as I can remember. My favorite type of car racing to watch on TV has always been rally. I have been a fan of it since I was really young. I am not sure why I have always liked it maybe it s the sliding and jumping of the cars that isn t really found anywhere else in car racing. I even bought a VW GTI in the 80 s and slid it around in the snow when I had a chance. Of course, I had no idea what the hell I was doing, but it sure was fun!

In the summer of 2004, DC began to sponsor Travis Pastrana, who, as well as being a motocross freestyle and Supercross star is an avid rally car racer. I worked closely on the deal and I made sure to include DC in his rally racing efforts. I knew this was my big chance what better of an excuse to go do something that has always been a dream of mine go rally race AND do it with one of our biggest athletes! I mean, it is my job to go hang out and entertain our athletes, right?

So, I made a call to the company that handles Travis rallying efforts for Subaru of America; Vermont SportsCar. I told them that I wanted to race with Travis in 2005, and to let me know what I needed to do to get there. They put me through two different classes with two former US champions; Tim O Neal (he has a private school in New Hampshire) and John Buffum (the winning-est rally driver in US history). It was quite an education and, I only wrecked one car in the process!

Part of my final education in order to race with Travis is to get some real rally race experience. But, Rally America has to be very cautious with new drivers such as me (insurance reasons). So, once I was entered into the first National event (1 of 8), they had to take some precautions. I was given some stern warnings to drive safe and I had to drive my Group N STi car detuned (VTCar had to turn my turbo boost to practically zero...a loss of almost 100 HP). Luckily, the first event I did was called Sno*Drift and it covered 126 miles of snow covered roads. So, the lack of horsepower didn t matter that much because driving on snow (without studs) most times requires more finesse than speed. Then, to my surprise, I ended up doing very well! I finished 7th overall and 5th in the Group N class. Not bad for my first National rally, and a snow rally at that! I think I shocked a few people by ending up so high on the leader board especially because I was racing a detuned car!

Once I finished that event (plus some smaller events), I was given permission to run in the Group N class at full power. So, I entered the remaining 7 events of the Rally America National Championship. I did very well, even finishing on the podium at several of the events in Group N and once overall (3rd at Maine Forest). The competition was great, including drivers such as current US champ Pat Richard, former WRC champion Stig Blomqvist, and of course Travis Pastrana. So, I was very proud and surprised to end up 4th Overall and 3rd in Group N for 2005! An even bigger surprise was being awarded the Rally America Rookie of the Year Award!

For 2006, Subaru decided to put more effort into the US rally team. They brought me on board as a factory driver with Travis and they are using the Subaru Rally Team USA name and graphics. I am very proud to be worthy of such a backing and am looking forward to battling Travis for this year s championship title. I won my first race (before Travis!) in February (100 Acre Wood Rally) and I am in a tight battle for the overall national championship .so, it s working out well so far!


RALLY INJURIES (Ever get any? How? Do you have any pre-existing ones that come back to haunt you? How do they affect you?):
The only injuries that I have sustained so far from rally have been whiplash. I have had two major crashes in the last year and they both have taken a small toll on my neck. First one (August 2005) was a 60 MPH clip of a tree that sent me spinning into another tree (destroyed the car) and the other was just recently (June 2006) where I rolled my car 1.5 times. Neither crash, as bad as they were, did anything but strain my neck (very well built and safe cars!).


FAVOURITE EVENT (And why)?
Rim of the World (Lancaster, CA). It features really fun and beautiful roads (most of roads run along the tops of the mountain ranges just North of LA) the roads have lots of jumps and challenging turns. It also has a great head-to-head spectator stage at a fairground that features a big jump (70 foot table top this year) and a water crossing.


HOME EVENT (What's it like, where is it, how do you feel about it)?
The closest event to my home (So. Cal) is the Rim of the World Rally. It s approx. 1 hour drive north of downtown LA (I am born and raised in So. Cal). I have done really well both times I competed in it 3rd overall in 2005, and 2nd in 2006.


PRACTICE ROAD/AREA (Do you have access to such a thing? Tell me about it.)?
As of today, no I do not have a practice area. But, I am in the process of building one. It will be done in the middle of August. I bought 550 acres just outside of Park City, Utah (I have a 2nd home there) and it will feature 10 miles of private rally roads.


COACHING/MENTORS (Who has helped guide you? How did you first meet and describe your relationship.)
I have been taught and coached by several past champions; Tim O Neal, John Buffum, David Higgins and Jakki Honkanen. All these people were brought in by the team to help Travis Pastrana and I learn to race to the best of our abilities. The team has invested a lot of time and resources in getting us to this level. We could not be where we are today with out this instruction and help.

John Buffum is my biggest mentor. He s part of the team and helps Travis and I at every race. He is the most successful U.S. rally racing driver ever, winning 11 national titles and 108 victories. His vast experience in racing and his expertise with the tires (very important part of rally) have been a tremendous benefit to Travis and I. We appreciate John s help a lot!


CO-DRIVER (How did you meet, how did you start competing together, describe the relationship -- inside the car and out, do you ever compete with anybody else?):
My co-driver s name is Alex Gelsomino. We have been competing together for a year and . I started with him in my 3rd rally, and have been with him ever since. The team coordinated our meeting and first drive together, and it just worked out very well.

We get along very well in the car. Alex has been involved a lot longer in rally than I and his experience has helped me a lot. He was born in Italy and rallied there when he was younger, plus he has many years of experience here in the US.


MECHANICAL (Who helps prep/maintain/service your car and how did you find them? What's your relationship like? Do you know who'll crew for you at X? Please provide names.):
All service, prep, car-building, etc. is handled as a team for Travis Pastrana and I by Vermont SportsCar for Subaru of America. The official team title is Subaru Rally Team USA . We are the only factored backed team in the US.


RALLY ROLE MODELS?
Petter Solberg (Subaru World Rally Team driver) and Colin McRae (former World Rally Champion). Both are amazing drivers with unique styles.


PERSONAL ROLE MODELS?
I personally look up to athletes that work hard and put their whole heart into what they do. These athletes include: Danny Way, Ricky Carmichael, Michael Jordan, Petter Solberg, etc.


RALLY CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:
Winning the Rally America Rookie of the Year awards in 2005, and winning my first race this February at the 100 Acre Wood Rally.


DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE/STRENGTHS/STRATEGY:
Meticulous. Focused. Committed to the sport and what it takes to be a top driver. Willing to go as hard as I can whenever it is necessary yet, able to back it down when need be.


MISC PERSONAL (Do you have a life outside rally? What is it? -- I'd be hoping to hear a little about that house you and your wife are building and your pending arrival...):
I have been a skateboarder since I was 7, a motocross rider and racer since age 12, and a snowboarder since age 20. Now-a-days I don t skate much, but I still really enjoy getting out on my snowboard as much as I can (I even have a home in Utah that features it s own private snowboard park called the DC Mtn.Lab) and I still ride my dirt bike whenever I can.

I have been married to my lovely wife for 2 years and we are expecting our first child this September.

I have been doing my job at DC since 1991 and I continue to live and breathe the brand (I truly love doing what I do). My favorite part of my job is the marketing and interacting with all our athletes.
